National Military Appreciation Month

One of our passions at Berkshire Group is giving back by supporting our active military and veterans. The United States military is comprised of an all-volunteer force. Individuals choose to raise their right hand and take an oath to defend the Constitution of the United States and to ‘well and faithfully discharge their duties’.

To genuinely appreciate our military requires some understanding of what they do.

Every one of the 1.3 million active and 800,000 reserve volunteers has his or her own reasons for enlisting. In addition to the immediate benefit of securing our National defense, this also contributes to the fabric of our society by producing men and women who have an experiential understanding of words like honor, duty, integrity, teamwork, discipline and commitment. To execute their duties, all military personnel undergo intensive academic and on-the-job training in their specific areas of service. This training can last from one month up to two years after their initial basic training. Keep in mind that all of this training is to prepare them to perform well in actual war time and combat environments where the stakes are the highest.

Some service members, after completing their enlistment, have a hard time finding work because their ‘training’ is not currently held in the same regard as a college degree. They go from having the daily responsibility of millions of dollars of equipment and/or hundreds of lives to operating a weed eater because of the disconnect in understanding between their skill set and the needs of employers. One organization that is doing great work to connect veterans and employers is the Hiring Our Heroes initiative, https://www.uschamberfoundation.org/hiring-our-heroes. Hiring Our Heroes is a nationwide initiative to help veterans, transitioning service members, and military spouses find meaningful employment opportunities.

Berkshire Group also supports Rolling Thunder, Inc. The major function of Rolling Thunder®, Inc. is to publicize the POW-MIA issue: To educate the public that many American Prisoners of War were left behind after all previous wars and to help correct the past and to protect future Veterans from being left behind should they become Prisoners of War-Missing In Action. We are also committed to helping American Veterans from all wars. For additional information on our chapter visit our resource page http://www.berkshiregroup.info/resources/ or http://www.rollingthunderchapter2ohio.com/index.html.

We encourage you to appreciate our great military, not just this month but, every day in an activeway. Take the time to thank a vet or active service member and their family. Contribute time and money to support veteran organizations. Read the Constitution. Find out who, in your workplace and circle of friends, is a veteran or reservist and learn about them.

May God continue to bless the United States of America and those who have and will volunteer to protect and defend her.
